CFC Highlights the 2023 Norman Jewison Film Program with Industry Showcase

On December 14, 2023, the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) hosted a spectacular Industry Showcase at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, dedicating the evening to celebrating the 2023 cohort of the Norman Jewison Film Program. This event marked the culmination of a transformative journey for emerging filmmakers committed to the dynamic and rewarding experience of the program.

The Norman Jewison Film Program, CFC’s signature initiative, is a guiding light for emerging to mid-level Canadian filmmakers. The intensive 5 ½ month professional program is designed to amplify narrative storytelling, foster a creative community, and unlock the full career potential of its residents. Tailored labs for directors, producers, writers, and editors showcase the program’s adaptability to the unique needs of its participants annually.

The evening began with an introduction by Executive Director maxine bailey, setting the stage for a night filled with appreciation and recognition of Canadian talent. In a heartfelt speech, Kathryn Emslie, CFC’s Executive Lead for Programs, Talent Development, and Content Creation, honoured the newest alumni by recounting their greatest achievements during their time at the CFC. The highlight was the symbolic gesture of a custom clapboard for each graduate, affirming the successful program completion and officially welcoming them into the esteemed community of CFC alumni.

The graduates took center stage throughout the evening, presenting an impressive showcase of their original pieces. Each short film served as a testament to their filmmaking expertise, talent, and the valuable knowledge absorbed during their time at the CFC. Featuring the works of Ian Bawa, Raghed Charabaty, Yuwi Kang, Fateema Al-Hamaydeh Miller, Leah Johnston, Isoken Ogiemwonyi, Kevin Dong, Nic Altobelli, Lee Marshall, Malachi Ellis, Minh-Anh Vo Dinh, Kimberly Manky, Margarita Valderrama, Mitchell LeBlanc, Arielle Skolnik, Maria Bykina, Ted Husband, and Mariana Urrutia, the Industry Showcase left a lasting impression on the audience with its diverse talents, bold voices, and unique storytelling.

The Industry Showcase stood as a powerful demonstration of the promising future of Canadian creators, illustrating the greatness expected from the next generation of filmmakers who have emerged from The Norman Jewison Film Program.
