CFC Presents CFC BLOCKO! Doc Series Featuring Personal Conversations With Black Alumni

This Canesugar Mediaworks production is a call to action piece from acclaimed creator Charles Officer

Toronto, October 7, 2020 – The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) is pleased to present CFC BLOCKO!, a seven-part series and call to action piece from acclaimed creator Charles Officer (Akilla’s Escape), produced by Canesugar Mediaworks. Premiering on CFC’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 4 p.m. ET, this short documentary series features personal conversations with six Black CFC alumni, as well as CFC Founder Norman Jewison, who span generations but share a common language – speaking truth to power.

The series includes seven episodes, six of which feature a ten-minute conversation with Black creators: director/executive producer Clement Virgo (RUDE, The Book of Negroes, Greenleaf); producer Lea Marin (What is Democracy?, Unarmed Verses); writer/co-executive producer Shernold Edwards (A Day Late and a Dollar Short, Haven, Anne With An E);executive producer/media executive Joan Jenkinson (Songs of Freedom, Inside the Mind of Leonardo, Soul); director Dawn Wilkinson (How to Get Away with Murder, Locke & Key); and actor Cara Ricketts (Anne with an E, Far Cry New Dawn). The final episode of the series is with award-winning and acclaimed filmmaker and CFC Founder Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night) about social justice and our responsibility as storytellers.

New episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. ET until Wednesday, November 25, at which time the whole series will be available to watch back-to-back. Charles’ vision for CFC BLOCKO! was to unify support for future Black creators. To help achieve that call to action, the CFC is bringing its community of supporters together to help elevate the voices, the work and the reach of our Black storytellers for decades to come. Providing financial support to all Black Artists coming through the CFC’s core programs through the newly created CFC Bursary Funds for Black Creators is but one step in that larger commitment.
