‘Tis the season of giving and our alumni are doing just that with new updates, awards, and announcements! As the season grows colder, alumni heat things up onscreen with viewer favourites such as Reservation Dogs featuring alum Devery Jacobs (actor), and Beans by Tracey Deer (director + co-writer), Meredith Vuchnich (co-writer) and Anne-Marie Gélinas (producer and founder of EMAfilms). Plus, alumni-featured films are set to make an appearance at this year’s Whistler Film Festival.

AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS
2021 Crystal Awards
Women in Film and Television Toronto has named the recipients for the 2021 Crystal Awards. Winners include CFC alumni, Board Member Dr. Shirley Cheechoo C.M. and more! The awards will be handed out at an in-person Gala in March 2022.
- Alum Jennifer Holness (President, Hungry Eye Film & Television Inc.) received the Creative Excellence Award
- Alum Anita Lee (Executive Producer, NFB) received the Mentorship Award
- Former CFC CDO Ana Serrano (President & Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University) received the Digital Trailblazer Award
- CFC Board Member Dr. Shirley Cheechoo C.M. (filmmaker, writer, actor, visual artist and Founder Weengushk Film Institute) received the Special Jury Award of Distinction

- Filming begins on the pilot of young adult comedy, FAKES. The series is directed by Jasmin Mozaffari, who was one of the inaugural participants in the CFC/Netflix Project Development Accelerator.
- The Black Screen Office (BSO) has selected 16 scripts from Black and people of colour writers and producers for its first development fund. Selected projects include CFC alum Helen Lee’s Parkdale and Ian Steaman’s Shine.
- Geordie Sabbagh’s thriller nabs $60K pitch prize
- Kimberly-Sue Murray is the deadliest woman in the galaxy playing Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game.
- CFC alumni Devery Jacobs will be presented with the Whistler Film Festival One To Watch Award
- Award-winning producer Virginia Rankin has joined indie prodco Blink Studios. Toronto-based Rankin will focus on discovering and working with new and diverse voices in Canada and internationally.
- Telefilm Canada welcomes Mehernaz Lentin as the new National Director, Feature Film – English Market.
- Great Pacific Media has signed Canadian director, writer, producer and CFC alumni Brad Peyton to adapt the Webby Award-winning series What If into a drama docuseries.
- Mark Montefiore’s production company New Metric Media is producing a small-town hockey comedy.
- CFC/Netflix Project Development Accelerator Participant Joy Haskell is one of eight directors selected to develop feature films & series at WIDC Story & Leadership, in collaboration with Whistler Film Festival.
- Alumni and Board Member Clement Virgo is tapped to direct Black Cyclone biopic about bicycle racer Major Taylor.
- The IPF announces funding for ten scripted short-form series. Selected projects include the alumni series My Dead Mom, from Lauren Corber; Streams Flow From a River from alumni company Fae Pictures and alum Shant Joshi, Gillian McKercher and Lindsay Blair Goeldner; and The Drop from Elizabeth Yake.
