CFC/NETFLIX CALLING CARD ACCELERATOR
CFC/NETFLIX MARKETPLACE ACCELERATOR
CFC/NETFLIX PROJECT DEVELOPMENT ACCELERATOR

OVERVIEW

The Netflix/CFC GLOBAL PROJECT is about creating opportunities and offering targeted support to a diverse group of Canadian creators as they work to showcase their talent and their narrative film and TV projects internationally.

We aim to inspire and empower vibrant and diverse talent pools, by amplifying their voices and stories so that they resonate globally, and by advancing Canadian talent and opportunities in the international marketplace through one of three accelerators:

  • The Calling Card Accelerator: Designed for ‘creators to watch’ with diverse perspectives who are in need of focused support to help enhance a produced calling card to showcase their talent and/or a proof of concept for their narrative feature film or TV series.
  • The Marketplace Accelerator: Strengthens the festival/market preparedness of diverse creators with exciting projects and/or produced content looking to attract and secure international attention and investment.
  • The Project Development Accelerator: Bolsters the international reach of dramatic feature films or TV series from mid-level diverse creators, by offering them enhanced and tailored access to development support and inspired global perspectives. More information coming soon.

Each of these accelerators will adopt a bespoke approach based on the specific creators involved and their project needs.

CFC would like to acknowledge and thank Netflix for their generous investment in Canadian talent and for helping to expand the CFC’s support of distinctive Canadian voices and their global reach.

PROGRAM PARTNER

CFC/NETFLIX CALLING CARD ACCELERATOR

The CFC/Netflix Calling Card Accelerator is designed for eligible “creators to watch” and their creative teams in need of focussed support to help enhance a calling card to showcase their talent, and/or a proof of concept for their narrative feature film and/or TV series.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Calling Card Accelerator provides targeted support for Calling Card feature films, short films, or proof of concepts that are in prep, production or post. Support accessed through this accelerator will be for enhancement of these works in progress, with the ultimate goal of accelerating opportunities for creators (writers or directors) internationally.

The Netflix/CFC partnership is in service of advancing and empowering Canadian voices and stories globally. This accelerator is not a content development or acquisition focussed endeavour for Netflix, and there is no obligation to enter into any agreements with Netflix with respect to the projects being supported by the accelerator.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Creators to watch who are:

  • BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour)
  • Women
  • LGBTQ2S+ persons
  • Francophone creators (French as a first language)

NOTE:“Creators to Watch” are writers and/or directors who have been building up a body of work in their chosen discipline(s), outside of an academic setting, and who have begun to demonstrate their skills and talent and/or who are looking to transition from one format to another.

WHAT IS THE APPROACH TO PROVIDING SUPPORT?

This accelerator will look at the needs of each creator and project and offer support in areas that will help elevate and enhance the work already being done to better showcase the creator(s) voice and/or future project potential. We are looking to support specific aspects of prep, production, post, completion and delivery of independently produced promos, short films, web series and first time ‘calling card’ low budget feature films.

Selected projects will receive support valued at anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the needs of the project in the form of:

  • Access to mentorship and consultants offering high level feedback and expertise to further elevate the work, for example:
    • Feedback on cuts
    • Test screening support
    • High level craft consultations (Editor, VFX, Cinematographer, Production Designer etc.)
    • Guidance during prep re. shooting schedules, shot lists, crewing, casting, VFX etc.

AND/OR

  • Targeted financial support in the form of a non-repayable micro-grant to fund targeted and strategic areas of a project, for example:
    • Specialized casting needs/support
    • Rehearsal time
    • Additional post time or select post enhancements etc.
    • Enhancement support for original music/score from Canadian composers/musicians

Projects can be eligible to receive support through the accelerator at any stage from the final stages of prep through to completion as appropriate, but delivery of the produced work being supported is intended to be within three months of receiving any support through this accelerator.

For clarity, financial micro-grants, may not be used for either script development or core production funding. All eligible projects must be fully financed.

The Calling Card accelerator will provide support for up to 10 projects a year.

HOW CAN THIS SUPPORT BE ACCESSED?

This accelerator is open for consideration of eligible projects throughout the year and there is no traditional formal application process or set deadlines. We will be working with a number of CFC alumni, organizations and industry partners in order to identify projects and talent that might benefit from this accelerator and we are also open to interested individual creators communicating their interest or inquiries directly to the CFC at filmandtv@cfccreates.com.

Decisions regarding selection of projects for the accelerator and the nature and level of support will be made by the CFC. In making these decisions, CFC will seek and engage the expertise of advisors and consultants to provide additional perspectives on individual submissions and their eligible projects on a case by case basis. All eligible projects being considered for support are looked at individually and many factors are considered in the decision making, including project stage and viability, timelines, project or creator needs and expectations vis a vis the resources CFC can offer.

This accelerator is a year round offering, however decisions regarding the creators and projects to be supported through the accelerator will be made as quickly as possible, but in no event later than twelve weeks from CFC’s emailed notice of confirmation of eligibility. Incomplete submissions will not be considered eligible.

This accelerator is looking to support all types of narrative stories that eligible creators want to tell, in the way that they want to tell them, by helping to enhance their work in ways that they and their creative teams feel is most necessary.

What might be considered a “Calling Card” for the purposes of this accelerator?

  • a first or second feature that will help define the distinctive voice and stories of the eligible creator and position them internationally
  • a short film that will allow the eligible creator to more fully realize their talent and voice
  • a web pilot that demonstrates an eligible creator’s original voice

What might be considered a “Proof of Concept” for the purposes of this accelerator?

  • a short teaser/promo for the eligible creator’s developed feature film or original web /TV series (that already exists in script form or as a detailed pitch/bible)
