FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CFC Media Lab Premieres VR Sketches Series at Hot Docs

Three Oculus Rift experiences that explore different facets of VR storytelling will be on display for 5 days at CFC Media Lab’s VR Lounge

Toronto, April 27, 2015 – With virtual reality a much sought-after experience at film festivals this year, the Canadian Film Centre’s Media Lab (CFC Media Lab) is set to present an exploration of the medium at the 2015 Hot Docs Film Festival, which runs from April 27th to May 1st. Debuting their VR Sketches Series, CFC Media Lab invites the filmmaking community to learn about and discover the grammar and language of VR storytelling.

CFC Media Lab VR Sketches Series
Working with a collective of game designers, visual effects aficionados, storytellers, 3D modellers, real-time interface designers, filmmakers and visual artists, otherwise known as OCCUPIED VR, CFC Media Lab is producing the VR Sketches Series, an ongoing investigation into today’s VR storytelling form. The series is premiering the first three works at Hot Docs in the CFC Media Lab’s VR Lounge where filmmakers -- and anyone interested in learning about interactive storytelling -- can experience them and discuss where VR can take documentary filmmaking.

The CFC Media Lab VR Sketches Series experience will premiere:

01 – Past

An experience that showcases 3D positional audio as we contextualize the place of VR in media and communications.

02 – Present

An intimate moment with Canadian skateboarder, DEVIN. The experience displays the use of high-resolution 3D 360-degree filmmaking.

03 – Future

An experience that provides a glimpse of the future of VR: watch a person transition from the real to the synthetic with the use of photo real 3D scanning.

Open Mic at CFC Media Lab’s VR Lounge
CFC Media Lab’s VR Sketches Series showcase will culminate in an interactive Open Mic ‘Town Hall’ discussion on where VR can take documentary filmmaking at 12 noon on Friday, May 1, 2015 in the CFC Media Lab’s VR Lounge. Moderated by CFC’s Chief Digital Officer, Ana Serrano, the session features respondents Morgan Young, Creative Director, Quantum Capture; Blair Renaud, CEO/Creative Lead, Iris VR; and J.Lee Williams, Director and Co-Founder, 1188 Films Inc.

The CFC Media Lab VR Lounge will be open to Hot Docs Industry passholders from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. April 27th through May 1st.
