CRUEL & UNUSUAL Receives Canadian Premiere at the Vancity Theatre

CRUEL & UNUSUAL, the 21st feature film developed and produced through CFC Features, and the first to be shot in British Columbia, will have its Canadian premiere in the director's hometown of Vancouver with an exclusive engagement at the Vancity Theatre. The supernatural puzzle film is the feature debut of director/writer Merlin Dervisevic. It stars David Richmond-Peck (“Orphan Black”), Michael Eklund(“The Call”), Richard Harmon (“Continuum”), Michelle Harrison(“Wild Roses”), and newcomer Bernadette Saquibal. Many of the cast and crew will be at the premiere screening on May 24.

The gripping story revolves around a man wrongfully condemned for killing his wife. He arrives in a bizarre version of hell where he is forced to relive her death for eternity. After it becomes clear that his truth is not the only one, he commits to a risk-filled plan to set things right.

CRUEL & UNUSUAL had its world premiere recently to sell out crowds at the Taipei Golden Horse Fantastic Festival. The film was in such high demand that a third screening was added, and it sold more tickets than any other film in the festival. CRUEL & UNUSUAL garnered interest from competing Taiwanese distributors who wanted to make the feature available to a wider Asian audience, causing a bidding war. The film is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One with international sales handled by Seville International.

Merlin Dervisevic attended the Canadian Film Centre where he wrote and directed the short film Exhuming Tyler. The film won best film runner-up at the USA Film Festival, nods for best drama at Yorkton, best writer and best director at the Leo Awards, and was specially presented by Norman Jewison at the Havana Film Festival. Merlin has also directed episodes of Comedy Network's “The Unprofessionals” and CBC's, “Our Hero”. CRUEL & UNUSUAL is his first feature film.

CRUEL & UNUSUAL is produced by Vancouver's Matthew Cervi (The Colony), a 2004 CFC alumnus, for Mad Samurai Productions, and Executive Produced by CFC's Justine Whyte. The film had its European premiere at the Brussels International Fantastic Festival, with a screening at the Nocturna Madrid International Fantastic Film Festival at the end of May.
