Biography
Best known as the screenwriter of the original cult horror film, Ginger Snaps, and the true legal saga starring Wendy Crewson, The Many Trials of One Jane Doe, Karen recently completed her second season as writer and co-executive producer on the critically-acclaimed sci-fi series, Orphan Black. Over her 20-year career, Karen has been commissioned to write original and adapted film and television scripts in almost every genre, by producers in Canada, Quebec, the UK, and the American studio system. Her television writing credits span eight different television series, including Flashpoint, The Listener and Queer as Folk USA. Karen is currently penning the feature film adaptation of Ian Hamilton’s award-winning Ava Lee mystery novel, The Water Rat of Wanchai and is developing her own original works in series and films, including a French-language co-write with acclaimed director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild). A graduate of The Canadian Film Centre’s Cineplex Entertainment Film Program (Writers' Lab) and Short Dramatic Film Program, her work has won a Canadian Comedy Award for Pretty Funny Screenplay, a special citation for the Ginger Snaps screenplay from the Toronto International Film Festival, Best Dramatic Series at the Canadian Screen Awards, and the Writers Guild of Canadaʼs prestigious Writers Block Award for outstanding service to the Canadian screenwriting community at large.
