CFC Directing Master Class: The Art of The Performance with acclaimed director Paolo Barzman
Saturday, December 1, 2007

Join filmmaker Paolo Barzman as he reflects on the actor/director relationships on his most recent feature Emotional Arithmetic starring Susan Sarandon, Max Von Sydow, Gabriel Byrne, Roy Dupuis and Christopher Plummer. Using clips from his film, Paolo will illustrate his process of working with the actors and the challenges he faced in directing strong on-screen performances. This Master Class will address aspects of directing performance including: understanding the actor’s process; how process differs from performer to performer and how this impacts the director; how an actor’s particular qualities can completely change a director’s interpretation of a role; how casting was managed on this film; questions around directing stars and tackling sensitive subject matter and/or scenes. This Master Class promises to be entertaining, educational and inspiring to filmmakers, actors and filmgoers alike.

CFC Media Lab Workshop: The Future of Cinema - Interactive Film Presented by: Ana Serrano, Director, CFC Media Lab
Saturday, December 1, 2007

From Janet Murray's Holodeck to Lev Manovich's Database Cinema, the interactive narrative represents the "holy grail" of the interactive medium. For some, the pleasure derived from interactive stories is found in the theorizing of them. For others such pleasure has yet to be found in mainstream practice. This hour-long workshop will look at best practice examples of interactive cinema from around the world (including North America's first interactive film, Late Fragment, produced by CFC and NFB) and will carefully deconstruct the creation of some of them paying close attention to how such interactive films get made -- the development & production process; the tools & platforms used for creation; and their distribution.

We look forward to seeing you in Whistler for more information go to www.whisterfilmfestival.com.
